Fan Wu X Mi-Kyoung Lee: The Reflective Memories is the biggest-scale fibre art exhibition held by Jupiter Museum of Art so far, comprehensively displaying the creative works of the two female artists in the past ten years. Both Fan Wu and Mi-Kyoung Lee use natural elements as mediums to reconstruct their perceptions and memories of the objective world. The eternal nature is the symbol of strength, exuberant vitality, growth and hope. The feelings and emotions that have been deposited in the memory utilize natural elements as the medium to convey the artist's positive reflections on society and nature, reality and spirituality, past and future.
Preface | Hongrong Lyu / Hui Li
Memory connects the past with the present. As time passes, the present gradually becomes a fragment of memory, which stores people's experiences and emotions. The recollection of memories is not nostalgia, but a form of introspection and self-reflection. For the artist, the evocation of memories and emotions is integrated into the art works repeatedly, and the memories are manifested into the art works. The creation process is like a string linking the reality with those memories in the artist's mind, and when the art works resonate with the audience, it forms a joint memory network between the artist and the audience.
The artworks of artists Fan Wu and Mi-Kyoung Lee have similarities in that they both use natural elements as a medium to reproduce their personal perceptions and memories of the objective world. The eternal nature is the symbol of strength, exuberant vitality, growth and hope. The feelings and emotions that have been deposited in the memory utilize natural elements as the medium to convey the artist's positive reflections on society and nature, reality and spirituality, past and future. The memories are transformed into flowers, branches, leaves, forests, vines and other objects, carrying this moment and the feeling of more people and perpetuating in the real world.
The purpose of this exhibition is to show how Fan Wu and Mi-Kyoung Lee think about the relationship between memory and the present through fiber art. The two position themselves as fiber artists and insist on creating works with fiber materials and fiber art language. Fiber art, which evolved from ancient weaving, seems to have been connecting long history and constantly changing new ideas with itself. Fiber art also connects human collective consciousness and individual emotions through intimate and familiar materials and craftsmanship. Fan Wu from China and Mi-Kyoung Lee from the United States, coincidentally used linear materials to connect the past memory with the present reality. The creative process of fiber art works is time-consuming. In the process of repetitive manual work such as coiling, knotting and twisting, the artists enter the realm of "integration of objects and subjects" with the rhythm of creation. Materials and crafts have become a medium that penetrates reality and spirit.
Fan Wu's works are mostly characterized by plant form and installation form, showing simple romance and calm elegance. The freely stretched plant forms and ordinary objects outlined and enclosed by linear language serves both as symbols and core elements, so as to express her feelings about the nature, time and life. In art practice, Fan Wu not only uses crafts as the way of completing works, but also a medium for her to narrate the past and discuss the present through the attributes and characteristics of handicrafts.
Mi-Kyoung Lee's works generate strong visual tension with vibrant colors and unusual shapes. Nature is the source of her inspiration, her reference for the reflection on reality and the carrier for her visions of the future. However, the images in her works are between the likeness and non-likeness of the objects of nature, which arouse resonance and imagination. Mi-Kyoung Lee incorporated memory, emotion and reflection into the image of nature through her twisting and knotting craft techniques.
Fan Wu X Mi-Kyoung Lee: The Reflective Memories is the biggest-scale fibre art exhibition held by Jupiter Museum of Art so far, comprehensively displaying the creative works of the two female artists in the past ten years. Under the pandemic, it is not easy to organize a two-person exhibition of Chinese and foreign artists. Hopefully this exhibition will be a good start to launch more fiber art exhibitions in the future. At the same time, it will also become a platform for promoting fiber art. Fiber art makes viewers closer to the art with materials and art that are often used in life. Fiber art enriches the aesthetic experience of the viewer by reflecting ideas and variety, and brings viewers with thoughts under the vision of fiber art.
