Preface | Yiwen Zhou

Art Shenzhen, contemporary art departs from here. "Basel For One Man" - art departs from the artist's soul. In the artist's view, wherever art is, the world is there. The blue planet, where art resides, in the lonely souls of humans.

New trends, new concepts, new attitudes. The global tour exhibition of contemporary art by Yiwen Zhou will take place in the United States, Dubai, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, and other places. The exhibition focuses on Yiwen Zhou's new fairy tale-themed contemporary art paintings, while incorporating installation art, meta-universe holographic light and shadow art, and other art forms. It pioneers the field of contemporary Chinese art exhibitions. It is not only the largest solo exhibition by a Chinese artist in recent years but also a groundbreaking exhibition that leads Chinese contemporary art into the future.

Over the past three years, centered around the aesthetics of biomimicry, Yiwen Zhou's "new fairy tale-themed contemporary art" has undergone artistic re-creation. It has given birth to the classic art installation work "Green Horse," which presents Chinese ink paintings in the form of mechanical installations. It has touched countless people, giving those in adversity the passion to run and bringing vivid green life awareness to their gray lives. It expresses Yiwen Zhou's concept of transcending difficulties and creating the value of life through his "new fairy tale-themed contemporary art."

"New fairy tale-themed contemporary art" is a painting style that combines poetic and fairy tale contexts to express the emotions and ideas of the Chinese people. It soothes the anxious souls of the post-pandemic era and tells Eastern stories in a universal language. It constructs human ideals using Eastern elements, reconstructing the intrinsic relationship between contemporary Chinese art, traditional Chinese art, and Western art. It represents a new direction for Chinese contemporary art in a globalized world.

"New fairy tale-themed contemporary art" is completely different from traditional ink painting styles. Yiwen Zhou combines the magical overlays of Eastern imagery with innovative painting techniques, conveying a dual narrative of historical storytelling and contemporary concepts. The blend of the virtual and the real, the light and the dark, incorporates Chinese traditional ink painting into contemporary art. He has created the concept, style, and structure of "new fairy tale-themed contemporary art," which represents a contemporary art form that transcends human spirit.

"New fairy tale-themed contemporary art" opens up a path to the future beyond conceptual art. Eastern civilization faces the world in a completely new posture. This is Yiwen Zhou's contribution to the development of contemporary art and has attracted significant attention in Asia, receiving wide acclaim.

Yiwen Zhou is a child of Dongting Lake, and art, fairy tales, and poetry are his lifelong loves. For the sake of his love in this life, he has abandoned everything that needed to be abandoned. This is the spring of 2023, under the sky of Shenzhen, China, where the clouds surge. At this moment, it seems as if the heartbeat of the world can be heard. Yes, in Shenzhen, China, you can hear the heartbeat of the world.

For Yiwen Zhou, Basel For One Man is an important historic moment for rethinking and defining the relationship between tradition and modernity, East and West.
